On May 5, 2014, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern Thailand, centered in Mae O, Phan District, Chiang Rai—the strongest ever recorded in the country. Buildings cracked, collapsed, and casualties were reported. Aftershocks continued for days, frightening residents across Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Nan, and Phayao.

Natural disasters like storms, floods, tsunamis, and earthquakes—once seen only in movies—are now real threats. Learning how to prepare, act, and recover is essential.

Before an Earthquake

  1. Secure furniture and avoid placing heavy items on high shelves.

  2. Plan a safe meeting point outside the house.

  3. Teach everyone how to shut off water, gas, and electricity.

  4. Prepare essentials—flashlight, fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, sturdy shoes.

  5. Learn basic first aid together as a family.

During an Earthquake

  1. Stay calm and think clearly.

  2. If indoors, take cover under sturdy furniture; if in a tall building, exit quickly when safe.

  3. If outside, move to open space, away from power lines or falling objects.

  4. If in a car, stop safely and stay inside until shaking stops.

  5. Avoid flames—use flashlights instead of candles due to possible gas leaks.

After an Earthquake

  1. Move to open ground; aftershocks may follow.

  2. Treat injuries immediately with first aid.

  3. Check for gas leaks and damaged wiring, and avoid dangerous areas.

  4. Keep children away from damaged buildings.

Disasters can strike anywhere, anytime. Understanding safety measures and preparing in advance is the best protection against future tragedy.
